You Kant Get There From Here

 

- Because Neither Here nor There are "Here"

There is a peculiar arrogance hidden in measurement. We rarely notice it because measurement works so spectacularly well. A bridge stands. A spacecraft reaches another planet. A ledger balances. A barrel contains what we say a barrel contains. Time cunningly progresses with the solar, lunar and cosmic cycles. Seasons move through phases. Birds migrate in noticeable periods. The cheetah preys upon the gazelle. The success of the metric seduces us into a much larger proposition: that because something can be measured, the measurement describes something essential about what is there. Once that assumption is installed, we begin constructing reality out of the instruments we invented to delimit it.

Yesterday I had a three-hour cognitive marathon with a dear friend at the whiteboard of life. Art Murray and I were interrogating the question about moving from the six domains of Integral Accounting into the 27-dimensional architecture I have been exploring, and every apparent bridge carried hidden cargo. Even the wave—the elegant refuge of modern physics—had already chosen sides. A wave has amplitude. A wave has wavelength. A wave propagates. A wave oscillates. Before we have invoked the mystery of collapse, we have already smuggled magnitude, distance and time into the room. The wave may describe a manifestation magnificently. But what if the question concerns the medium in which manifestation itself becomes possible?


Euclid gave us an extraordinarily powerful way to make distinction intelligible. Point, line, plane, angle, distance: the world could be rendered into relations that survived the peculiarities of individual perception. His achievement was not that he discovered that the universe was Euclidean; it was that he constructed an internally coherent geometry within which relationships could be demonstrated. The distinction matters. A metric permits comparison. Comparison permits classification. Classification permits accounting. And accounting, once sufficiently useful, acquires the strange habit of forgetting that it began with delimitations. We start with a way of describing the world and eventually mistake the description for the world. And, importantly, we delimit “a thing” to its visible or legible “edges” without considering that the “thing” may have an invisible field, an energetic domain or the like. We say the sun is 93 million miles away while the sun responds—“you’re in my solar system and I’m all of it,” possibly?

Plato had already worried at the other end of this problem. The visible thing could not simply exhaust what the thing was. Appearance participates in something that appearance does not contain. Whether one accepts his Forms as ontology is almost beside the point for this musing. Plato left Western thought with a magnificent irritation: the realization that what appears may be neither false nor complete. The shadow is real as shadow but is distinct by incident light, not by itself as itself. Its error begins only when shadow claims to exhaust the thing casting it. Perhaps accounting has precisely this problem. Money is not unreal. Commodity is not unreal. Technology, culture, knowledge and well-being are not unreal. But the representation of any of these is a reflection, and reflection is not essence. The ledger is not the enterprise. The price is not the value. The map is not the terrain. And, perhaps most importantly for what Art and I were discussing, the waveform is not the medium.

Archimedes makes the problem even more delicious. Give him a place to stand and he can move the Earth. The lever is among humanity’s most beautiful demonstrations of relational intelligence: magnitude, distance and fulcrum conspire to transform force. But there it is again—a place to stand. The proposition requires position. The lever requires distance. Mechanical advantage requires relation expressed metrically. Archimedes does not fail us; quite the opposite. He succeeds so completely that he reveals the boundary of the question. What happens when the inquiry concerns that for which there is no external place to stand? Where is the fulcrum when where itself is an emergent delimitation? What leverage is available when distance has not yet been admitted into the description?

This was approximately where Art and my brains entered what we wonderfully called “joyful pain.”

We had begun with Integral Accounting. Its six domains—Commodity, Custom & Culture, Knowledge, Money, Technology and Well-being—were created precisely because monetary accounting performs an extraordinary act of dimensional collapse. It takes an enterprise teeming with qualitatively different relations and privileges one metric through which those relations are rendered comparable. The criticism is not that money is bad or monetary accounting useless. Quite the contrary: its extraordinary utility is what makes the problem difficult to see. Money creates a metric through which unlike things can interact in a common representation. But the instant we confuse that common representation with the phenomena represented, we have made an ontological claim disguised as arithmetic.

The obvious temptation when moving from Integral Accounting’s six domains toward 27DT is therefore to add dimensions. Six somehow becomes twenty-seven. Build a bigger coordinate system. Add variables. Create a tensor. Find a wave. Let possibility occupy some expanded state space and then invoke collapse to explain how one possibility becomes an observed event.

Except the wave has already arrived too late.

Amplitude is already metric. Wavelength is already distance. Frequency is already dependent upon periodicity and time. Propagation presumes some relation through which propagation can be described. Even collapse divides description into something resembling before and after. None of this makes waveform mathematics mistaken. It merely means that waveform cannot serve unexamined as the primal medium if the very question under consideration is whether time and distance belong to manifestation rather than to the condition permitting manifestation.

And here the whiteboard became much more interesting.

Context. Observer. Observed.

At first these look like three convenient categories. But none is primitive or innocent. Each carries delimitations. Perspective, reflection/non-essence and classification condition Context. Expectation, orientation and metric condition Observer. Euclidean representation, approval and authority participate in what eventually becomes admissible as Observed. These are not commandments engraved on tablets. They are working nodes scribbled onto a whiteboard during three hours of discovering assumptions hiding inside other assumptions. Their provisional character matters because 27DT is not served by replacing one unquestioned taxonomy with another.

The word metric became particularly troublesome. We ordinarily imagine measurement occurring after observation: first something exists, then somebody measures it. But what if metric participates in determining what can appear as an observation? The observer cannot report distance without having admitted an operation by which separation becomes comparable. Once metric enters, geometry becomes available. Once geometry enters, location, amplitude, displacement and trajectory become describable. The waveform can now appear. But the waveform cannot retrospectively explain the condition from which metric itself became possible without risking circularity.

This is where the search for a primal Medium becomes treacherous, because almost every noun we reach for already contains the assumptions we are trying to interrogate. Call it a substrate and we imagine something underneath. Call it prior and we imagine something earlier. Call it outside and we create spatial separation. Call it higher-dimensional and we reach for another coordinate system. Call it a field and physics invites us to assign values across spacetime. Call it a lattice and immediately we picture points separated by distances. Nearly every available noun arrives carrying contraband.

The primal Medium I am contemplating is therefore not another object in the architecture. It is not a hidden fourth vertex attached to Context, Observer and Observed. It is not underneath their interaction or beyond it in some direction we could eventually travel. It is both pre-event condition and the medium in which an observed can instantiate, while remaining infinitely orthogonal to the entire interaction.

Even “pre-event” must be handled carefully. Pre here cannot mean earlier, because earlier has already conceded time. It means logically primal rather than chronologically antecedent.

And infinitely orthogonal cannot merely mean perpendicular. Conventional orthogonality presumes enough common mathematical structure to define an inner product and declare two vectors perpendicular. That is already metric. I use infinitely orthogonal to point toward something more troublesome: the primal Medium cannot be exhaustively projected into the dimensions of the interaction it permits. It is not ninety degrees away from manifestation. Ninety degrees is already somewhere. It is not another dimension awaiting measurement. It is primal to the conditions through which dimensionality becomes meaningful.

More importantly, infinite orthogonality contemplates a Medium in which no observable manifestation provides a privileged basis from which another manifestation—or the Medium itself—can be exhaustively inferred. What statistics would call absence of correlation is only the observable residue of a more primal condition: no vantage point contains the metric by which the Medium may be reduced to another vantage point. An infinite collection of manifestations therefore need not asymptotically reconstruct the Medium, because every manifestation has already passed through delimitation.

But leaving the Medium alone creates another mistake. Manifestation demands another irreducible triadox: Medium. Field. Observable.

Not three stages. Not three locations. Not cause, transmission and effect. Not Medium followed by Field followed by Observable. Such a sequence would reinstall time precisely where we have declined to presume it. And certainly not three boxes arranged beside Context–Observer–Observed as though the two triadoxes occupied neighboring apartments in a larger Euclidean building.

This is beyond para.

The Medium is the primal condition, infinitely orthogonal to the interaction. The Field is the relational possibility of manifestation without requiring distance between its relations. The Observable is that which has become sufficiently delimited to instantiate within Context–Observer–Observed. None can be collapsed into another, yet none requires a temporal story in which Medium becomes Field and Field subsequently becomes Observable. Even the word becomes is dangerous because grammar desperately wants to turn ontology into chronology.

The distinction between Field and Observable is therefore crucial. In conventional physics we frequently render a field observable by assigning quantities to locations: a scalar here, a vector there, a magnitude varying across coordinates. The mathematics is immensely productive, but by then extension and metric have already entered. The Field contemplated here is more primal. It is not distributed across space because “across” presumes separation. It is relational possibility without the requirement that relation be expressed as distance. The Observable is where—already an illicit spatial word—relational possibility becomes available to delimitation. Only there can Context situate it, Observer metricize it and Observed render it Euclidean.

Nothing needs to travel.

That sentence may be more consequential than it first appears. If Medium–Field–Observable is drawn as a process, the drawing will lie. If Field is pictured as a sea through which something travels, the metaphor has smuggled distance back into the model. If Observable “emerges from” Field, imagination immediately watches an object cross some ontological threshold. If the Field “contains possibilities,” we begin imagining an inventory of unborn futures waiting for selection. And if one of those possibilities “collapses,” chronology quietly returns: first possibility, then actuality.

But what if manifestation requires none of these? Nothing need travel because locomotion is a description available after metric. Nothing need wait because waiting requires time. Nothing need cross because crossing requires separation. Nothing need collapse from a distant possibility because distance has not yet been earned. This is why waveform collapse, while fascinating within the Observable, cannot automatically explain manifestation. Running the movie backward doesn’t recover the projector, much less explain the possibility of projection. The wave is already inside the account.

Kant waits for us here with a knowing German smile.

The Ding an sich, the thing-in-itself, marks precisely the kind of boundary modernity repeatedly wants to trespass. We encounter phenomena under conditions of possible experience; we do not simply peel those conditions away and discover the thing exactly as it exists independently of them. The distinction between phenomenon and noumenon does not provide a secret tunnel to noumenal reality. It tells us something considerably more irritating: our apparatus of apprehension participates in what can be apprehended.

But 27DT pushes my musing somewhere slightly different from Kant. The primal Medium is not simply another Ding an sich hiding behind the Observable. That would make it another thing. Nor does removing Observer reveal it. Remove the Observer while retaining distinction, metric, classification, geometry and the category “Observed,” and we have not escaped the interaction. We have merely erased one vertex from our drawing. The thing-in-itself is not simply the thing with the observer removed.

And subtraction does not necessarily converge upon essence. We can subtract wavelength, amplitude, distance, time, location, classification and perspective one after another, but the operation of subtraction is itself being performed from within an architecture of distinction. We cannot assume that progressively removing the properties of manifestation eventually leaves the primal condition sitting naked on the table.

Heidegger complicates the problem further. His concern with the distinction between beings and Being is useful precisely because Western thought has an extraordinary habit of turning the condition by which something can show itself into another something available for inspection. Even his language of the clearing becomes dangerous if we picture an empty place into which beings subsequently arrive. There need be no empty place, because place is one of the things we have not yet earned the right to assume. The condition of manifestation cannot necessarily be treated as merely another manifested thing standing beside all the others.

And this is where Integral Accounting unexpectedly returns with considerably more force. Perhaps the deepest failure of conventional accounting is not that it counts too few things. If that were the problem, we could simply monetize everything else. Assign a dollar value to culture. Price knowledge. Calculate the net present value of well-being. Monetize technology. Turn ecological integrity into an asset class. Congratulations: we would have expanded the ledger while leaving its ontology completely untouched.

The more unsettling possibility is that the assumptions of accounting determine what is permitted to appear as account-able. Integral Accounting’s six domains were an attempt to resist that collapse. Commodity is not Money. Custom & Culture is not Technology. Knowledge is not Well-being. Their relationships matter precisely because their distinctions matter. But even six dimensions can become another prison if we assume that extending the coordinate system gives progressively better access to essence.

This is where the bridge between Integral Accounting and 27DT finally begins to look different. IA identifies domains in which consequential value manifests without requiring all value to collapse into the monetary metric. But 27DT asks an earlier and considerably more uncomfortable question: what assumptions made manifestation available to accounting in the first place? Perspective, reflection and non-essence, classification; expectation, orientation and metric; Euclidean representation, approval and authority. Not answers. Delimitations.

And behind—no, not behind. Beneath—no, not beneath. Prior—only if we immediately deny chronological priority.

Language keeps trying to put the Medium somewhere. That failure may itself be informative.

The six-dimensional account is therefore not simply expanded into twenty-seven dimensions. Twenty-seven cannot be twenty-one additional columns on Art Murray’s spreadsheet. Nor is 27DT reached by taking the six domains and repeatedly multiplying them until the arithmetic produces the desired number. The architecture must preserve something that dimensional accumulation cannot: the irreducibility of relations while refusing to mistake their manifestation for the primal Medium permitting them.

Medium–Field–Observable concerns manifestation. Context–Observer–Observed concerns delimitation. The node assumptions concern the conditions through which an account can arise. And the primal Medium remains infinitely orthogonal to the interaction—not as a remote supernatural realm, not as a mystical object inaccessible because we lack sufficient enlightenment, and not as a secret twenty-eighth dimension, but as that which cannot be exhaustively rendered by the very delimitations through which rendering occurs.

This is why the journey from six dimensions to twenty-seven eventually stopped looking like a journey. Euclid gives us magnificent geometry once distance has been admitted. Archimedes gives us extraordinary leverage once there is a place to stand. Plato reminds us that appearance need not exhaust essence. Kant shows us why removing the conditions of apprehension doesn’t simply hand us the thing-in-itself. Heidegger asks what it means for anything to show itself at all.

Integral Accounting then asks a deceptively practical question: What have we excluded because our accounting system could not see it? And 27DT turns the question back upon the questioner: What did you have to assume before you could call anything “seen”?

That is approximately where three hours of scribbling triangles, words and arrows onto a whiteboard left us holding our heads and announcing, “My brain is in joyful pain.”

Because perhaps there is no road from here to there. Perhaps there is no there. There may instead be Medium, Field, Observable—manifestation without the prerequisite of distance—and Context, Observer, Observed—delimitation without the presumption that its delimitations constitute essence. And infinitely orthogonal to every account we construct remains the primal condition that makes accounting possible without ever becoming merely another entry in the account.

The ledger isn’t the enterprise. The price isn’t the value. The waveform isn’t the medium. The observation isn’t the observed. The metric isn’t the relation. And 27DT isn’t the primal Medium. It may merely be an architecture disciplined enough to keep reminding us not to confuse any of them. The instant 27DT claims to describe the Medium, rather than discipline our account of its manifestations, it commits the very error it was constructed to expose.

And perhaps the joyful pain begins when we realize that “here” was one of our assumptions all along.
